Steam For Mac On May 12

Valve has confirmed that the Mac version of digital distribution platform Steam will launch on May 12.

The company revealed last month that it would be bringing the service and its Source gaming engine to the platform, later calling the move “the biggest event in Steam’s history”.

Nier Leads Japanese Chart

The PS3 version of Square Enix’s Nier debuted atop the Japanese software chart during the week ended April 25.

The game managed 60,000 sales, more than double the total of second-placed New Super Mario Bros. Wii, while the Xbox 360 edition of Nier came in at 11, moving less than 12,000 copies.

Three other new titles made the top ten, including The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion – Game of the Year Edition at nine.

Boy Scouts of America has introduced videogame awards for the first time.

The awards fall under the Cub Scouts Academics and Sports Program, which focuses on the development of physical, mental and emotional fitness.

Scouts are required to complete three tasks to earn a belt loop, while advanced skills are recognised by pins.

Apple CEO Hits Back At Adobe

Apple CEO Steve Jobs has published a lengthy explanation for the company’s decision not to support Adobe Flash on iPhone, iPod and iPad.

“Adobe has characterised our decision as being primarily business driven – they say we want to protect our App Store – but in reality it is based on technology issues,” Jobs wrote. “Adobe claims that we are a closed system, and that Flash is open, but in fact the opposite is true.

Bethesda Opens Two European Offices

Bethesda Softworks has opened new sales and marketing offices in Frankfurt, Germany and Paris, France.

Frank Matzke and Julie Chalmette have joined the company to act as managing directors of the German and French operations, respectively.

Matzke previously served as vice president for Europe at Sierra Entertainment and as marketing director for central Europe at Vivendi Games.

Chalmette formerly held the position of general manager for Vivendi Games France.
