The Halo: Reach beta has less than a week to go, and now you have one more reason to put a few more hours into it: Generator Defense. The new playlist is now live, presenting players with a 3-on-3 match of Spartans vs. Elites. The objective is simple: Elites attack the generators and Spartans defend them. Be sure to remember that the actual playlist is called “Network Test 1″ — an apt title, if our first few laggy games were any indication. But hey, what’s a little lag when the survival of the whole human race is at stake?

In other news, a second episode of Halo: Reach Betabusters is available, and it includes plenty of things you might not know about in the beta (including the ability to assassinate players through glass). Find it after the break.

It’s fair to say Crackdown was a surprise — even if you didn’t buy it for the Halo 3 beta key, odds are that you downloaded the demo and found a pretty impressive pre-GTA IV open-world shooter. That seems like a blessing and a curse for Audio Director Kristofor Mellroth and the rest of the dev team at Ruffian Games working on the sequel: on the one hand, we have fond memories of the original game, but on the other, there are more great open-world games out there now. Will we go back to Pacific City now that we’ve got a choice?

Mellroth is doing everything on his end to make sure that we do. From the music of the game (which features remixes from the likes of Bob Dylan and Creedence Clearwater Revival, as well as electronic beats by artists like Tokyo Black Star and Adam Freeland) to gunshots, explosions, and the ever-present tones of Michael McConnohie, he’s put a lot of thought into what Crackdown 2 should sound like and why. Read on for an exclusive interview with the game’s audio director.

Not content on simply golfing, the Helghast are making their way into yet another PlayStation game. Like its Xbox 360 counterpart, the PS3 version of Lost Planet 2 will feature its own console-exclusive characters. In addition to the PS3-only Monster Hunter characters, two Helghast skins will be made available as a free download via the PSN in June. As noted on the PlayStation.Blog, this will be the only game ever to include the Helghast, a Monster Hunter, Dead Rising‘s Frank West, and Resident Evil‘s Albert Wesker all in one place.

We wouldn’t be surprised, though, if Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 manages to reunite all of these characters for a second time. Check out a trailer after the break.

As of right now, there is absolutely no reason you shouldn’t at least try Jason Rohrer’s delightful, unique game, Sleep Is Death. Rohrer has officially lowered the price to … well, whatever you’re willing to pay for it. The minimum is $1.75 — in order to cover processing and bandwidth fees — but beyond that you can set your own price. The purchase nets two copies of Sleep Is Death — one for you and one for a friend on Mac, Linux, or PC — along with access to all future updates.

In case you missed our hands-on impressions of the game, it’s essentially an adventure game with a sizable twist: it’s actually being created as you play. It can only be played between two people, with one acting as the ‘player’ and the other acting as ‘controller,’ who creates the story and game assets on the fly. If it sounds bizarre, it is, but it’s also one of the most intriguing game concepts we’ve seen this year.

Whatever you choose to pay for it, it will be a small price to pay for the opportunity to create stories like this.

The Beatles are a tough act to follow. And so, several weeks from the release of Green Day: Rock Band, publisher MTV Games has some promoting to do. MTV Games GM Scott Gutherie recently explained the reasoning behind picking the younger, less “classic rock”-oriented band for its next single-act music game following The Beatles: Rock Band.

“We were pleased with the performance of Beatles: Rock Band, but we were expecting higher sales,” Guthrie said. “Our core audience of 16- to 34-year-old males are much more familiar with Green Day music than The Beatles.” Targeting the core gaming audience with a band active during their lifetimes certainly seems like a sensible business move, though it does signal a move away from the kind of market expansion MTV and Harmonix were attempting with Beatles. However, Guthrie’s suggestion that “Green Day probably has a much higher awareness than perhaps The Beatles did” seems like a stretch. Everyone knows The Beatles.

The clear market advantage that the Green Day game does have is the benefit of being compatible with Rock Band’s existing and ever-growing library, as its tracks are exportable (for a fee) to Xbox 360 and PS3 hard drives and playable in the main iterations of the series. Though Guthrie didn’t say as much, it’s possible Beatles sales suffered because the game was a standalone project, which didn’t mesh well with the Rock Band ethos and its core demographic.

While Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood may hold the cover spot of the next issue of PlayStation: The Official Magazine, the July 2010 issue will also feature a “lovefest feature” on PixelJunk Shooter 2, Q-Games’ not-yet-announced-but-very-real PSN sequel, according to a Tweet from EIC Gary Steinman.

Considering the numerous hints of a sequel, we’re unsurprised that the game’s existence is confirmed by an uneventful preview of a preview. (It seems Sony is intent on making this a trend.) If Sony shows this off at its E3 press conference, just try to act shocked, okay?

Say what you will about the decidedly kid-oriented Power Rangers franchise, but it’s made for some pretty enjoyable beat-em-up video games in console generations past. Hence our interest in Namco Bandai’s recent decision to renew its partnership with Saban Brands to start making games based on the Mighty Morphin heroes once again.

According to Eurogamer, this collaboration was made possible by Saban’s recent move to re-acquire the Power Rangers IP from Disney, which has owned the rights to the franchise since 2001, and has used it to launch like, a zillion spin-off series. We hope any games Namco Bandai creates under the partnership focuses on the original crew. You know, Zack, Kimberly, Trini … the Red one, and … the nerdy one. Also, the insufferable robot.

The NPD Group’s recent annual poll of MMO fans’ favorite online titles seems to indicate a pretty substantial power shift in the MMORPG space — one that heavily favors Turbine’s Dungeons & Dragons Online. The D20-friendly game, which went free-to-play last September, managed to wrestle the number three spot in the survey out of Guild Wars’ hands. The percentage of participants who claim to be active DDO players doubled from four to eight since last year’s survey.

The survey also inquired what MMOs former World of Warcraft players have switched over to in the past year. Though fellow free-to-play title Runescape fell from 20 percent to 13 percent in this category, DDO jumped from five percent to 11 percent year-over-year. That just goes to show: People don’t just like free stuff, they like free stuff that didn’t used to be quite so free. Also, they like dragons. And occasionally dungeons.

In the sea of action-shooters available on Xbox Live Arcade, it’s fitting that the latest actually takes place on the sea. Hitting XBLA on May 19 is Aqua: Naval Warfare, a top-down dual-stick shooter drenched in a stylish steampunk setting. In the game, players take on the role of Captain Grey who must fend off the Gothean Empire from the invading Emperean Empire.

In gameplay terms, that basically means “point the right stick at things you want to destroy until that happens.” The world of Aqua: Naval Warfare is unique, flooded by a cataclysmic event with the majority of its landmass underwater. Like that awesome movie Waterworld! Did we say “awesome?” We mispronounced “We’re still waiting for our refund, Mr. Costner.”

EA has launched a promotional contest for NBA Jam in which entrants submit their best — or best worst — one-liners for a chance to have them used by classic NBA Jam announcer Tim Kitzrow in the Wii game. We imagine winning is akin to being Zack Morris for the rest of your life.

As the instructional video above, uh, instructs, you’ll need to submit your one-liners on the NBA Jam contest page on Facebook. The contest is already underway, and the entry period closes May 19.

Oh, need one to get you started? How about: “Need some fries with that BOOMSHAKE-A-LAKE-A-LAKE?” (Hmm, maybe you should just come up with one of your own.)
