Slot another point or two on that chart comparing and contrasting how
things are done in Japan and in the States – - the one you know everybody
here has on their wall
– - because I really can’t conceive of United or
Delta ever running a cross-promotional campaign like this. (Virgin might, sure,
but the discussion’s changed rather significantly once you’ve got mood-lighting
on your planes.)

The point is that airlines are generally pretty careful about not
having any material on board that could make any passengers anxious. And you’ve
got to figure that any gadgets designed to put you in the reality of creepy
bio-mechs fighting in an ultra-violent Apocalypse are quite liable to upset those with
sensitive constitutions.

== TEASER ==

Anyway, all this preamble clears the runway, as it were, for these tidbits about how EVANGELION 3.0‘s just
about to take off next week with a promo campaign on All Nippon Airlines. According to ANN, through a tiered scheme of complimentary, paid and prize options,
passengers can get EVA-themed stickers, file-folders, ID
card cases, 3D crystal glasses, portable navigation systems and that augmented
reality phone app
. The last one will at last grant you the ability to see the terrible sight of a life-sized EVA skulking outside of Tokyo’s
Haneda Airport…

…you know, exactly the kind of thing that anybody a little anxious about flying would want to see before taking off.

FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST: BROTHERHOOD OVA COLLECTION isn’t all too
attractive as a title. It’s plainly descriptive in the same way that
stickers labeling the inventory boxes in Square Enix’s official tape library would be.
Then again, “inventory” is probably the most operative word here anyway, since
this disc basically just puts all the odds and ends of this series’ previous home video
releases together into one place that better matches the recent, more comprehensive
FMA:B boxsets. Effectively, it’s a special
features disc being sold on its own.

Much like superhero comics’ Annuals used to, this OVA COLLECTION exists
primarily to answer little “continuity questions” that the main series’ 64
episodes still didn’t have room to address. How did the State Alchemists
Mustang and Hughes become such good friends? What made the soldiers in the snow
fortress of Briggs fear Izumi so much? Where did Winry get her ear rings and
why did Hawkeye grow her hair out?

As you raise an eyebrow about the apparent minutiae in that last
question, you know all too well that stories like these can teeter rather shakily
above a dry pit of triviality. As is the case with most anthologies, this
collection’s a bit of a mixed bag. Some shorts stumble into the pit, while
others make even the most tenuous inventories into something surprisingly significant.

“The Blind Alchemist”

The best short of the set sees Ed & Al visiting a wealthy estate to
investigate reports that the resident alchemist’s had success with human transmutation.
Take heed – - the fact that this alchemist had to gruesomely sacrifice his eyes
to seemingly resurrect the estate’s young girl is actually the least creepy
surprise in this concise tale of gothic terror.

Perfectly distilling the “DUCK TALES does FAUST” experience of the first 20
FMA: B episodes, the tone of this jerks around rather jarringly because of the
chibi humor. Just like how the mood of dramatic moments in the show would be shot
down by the intrusion of super-deformed pratfalls, so too does this short nearly
kill its own moments of horror and insight with the same sort of shenanigans.

Thankfully, there isn’t enough chibi to derail the train, and
this short ends up being much better than the sum of its parts – - a chilling
reminder of the truly dangerous forces these Alchemical Kids are paying
the price for playing with.

“Simple People”

As discussed earlier, this short focusses on Winry and Hawkeye’s
respective choices in fashion. Surprisingly, it actually manages to spin these
seemingly inconsequential details into simple, yet effective, metaphors for
these character’s relationships. Winry’s earrings turn out to be gifts from Ed to placate
her during his frequent automail maintenance visits; giving us a little more
development to their courtship which we didn’t necessarily get in the show.
Likewise, the “cross-polination” of simple inspiration the two ladies take from eachother
is a nice understatement for Hawkeye’s gradual humanization.

That said, there’s a little lame chibi in this, too, and it also picks
up another albatross that repeatedly brought the main series down – -
that is, the sort of “battlefield philosophizing” which sounds rather embarrassingly
inauthentic. When Hawkeye starts drawing a comparison between how she wears her hair and the realities of her career as a sniper, you’ll roll eyes far enough to start thinking that an absence of dialog would’ve been more effective than the lines that were used.

“The Chronicle of Teacher”

Since Izumi was such a battleax of a mentor to Ed & Al, it’s
honestly a treat to see her as a callow and overeager apprentice here,
suffering her own sort of humiliation in training. Much like some folk
tale of martial arts piety, this short shows her as a youth seeking out
instruction from a legendary master Alchemist. He sets her back, in turn, on a
seemingly-insurmountable challenge of survival in the icy wilderness, and it’s there that she
becomes a terror to the troops stationed in Briggs.

Out of the four, this is the only one that really answers a question
that was left lingering by the show. The state soldiers made such a hoodoo about this dangerous firebrand’s return to their turf that you did actually grow curious about what earned her such a rep.

Well… question answered.

“Yet Another Man’s Battlefield”

In this last ditty, a young Roy Mustang bonds with an upperclassman Hughes in State
Alchemist bootcamp as the two save an Ishvalan recruit from racist bullies.
Their team-up blooms into a rivalry, which in turn blooms into a meaningful
friendship, and that friendship’s put to the test when the two must eventually take out the Ishvalan after he goes rogue
during the civil war.

While this short actually has a resonsant plot, it suffers from the
same middle school Social Studies monologues as the second short – - and actually loses a lot more for it, as a result. Normally, I think FUNimation’s done a superb job with these dubs, but this honestly was
a standout case where you could see a good message getting muddled in the translation.

Amusingly enough, this disc also includes a series of COMIC THEATER shorts which show that chibi can actually be funny in this world when properly sequestered. Covering nearly every beat of the series, these gags deliver a hole bevy of inside-jokes that poke plenty of rather delightful holes in the whole saga. Watching this, you wish there could be some epic re-edit of the series that cuts all the chibi gags out and puts them in a separate feature.

No surprise – - this is designed solely for fans who’re already well versed in FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST: BROTHERHOOD. Being one of those fans, I come down on it a little harder than I might usually because these critiques are probably necessary to temper what would would be non-step praise, otherwise.

I still stand by my assertion that TIGER & BUNNY has serious
potential to be a real crossover hit once it gets properly dubbed. When Anime Expo runs in a month or so, I have
this gut feeling that I’ll be seeing plenty of Hero TV cosplayers
roaming around the aisles. Their numbers might even double at AX
2013, if the dub in question hits at the right moment. Hell, they might even go up another integer
depending on the release of these two flicks.

See, as you might be aware, no less than two TIGER & BUNNY movies are
in the works. That’s been known for a while, but now ANN has a few more details
about the particulars.

The first flick will be basically another one of those
glorified clip shows – - although the makers are now insisting that it won’t be
comprised entirely of clips. There will be some “untold, behind-the-scenes” stories. In the best
case, that means we’ll get some new back-story scenes. In the worst case, I suppose that
language could be construed to mean we’ll be seeing EPK interviews with the
cast and crew intrusively interspersed throughout the movie.

The first flick’s coming out in September, while the second flick’s
coming out sometime next year. It’s been confirmed that it’ll be an all new
story and, if I were to hazard a wild guess, I’d imagine it might have to do
with the Hero TV gang finally taking the vigilante Lunatic down. That sounds about right, no?

Ah, yes… I do smell a back-to-basics, closer-to-the-source approach, I
do, I do.

I haven’t ever even gotten to read the original LUPIN III manga and I
can sense – - even as it radically recasts Fujiko as the lead – - that this show’s darker tones and characterizations must be hewn closer to what was
on the page. This franchise always shared a lot in common with Bond, so it’d certainly
fits that it’d be due for its own CASINO ROYALE revamp eventually. Indeed, the
intro to this show plays exactly like a Bond opener (albeit one created after
the creators finally stopped being coy.)

== TEASER ==

Maybe more than any other quality, I appreciated this for having the
first effectively experimental animation I’ve seen in a while. Watch
enough shows that adhere rather rigidly to the traditional rendering style, and
you’ll understand why I absolutely savor shows like TATAMI GALAXY and THE COUNT
OF MONTE CRISTO
when they come around. Most often, the crew thinking outside
the box about the rendering means they’re doing the same for the plotting, too.

Perhaps this tale of flirtation
between thieves plays a few familiar beats… but those beats are at least some
downright unusual drums. I honestly can’t say I’ve run into a story
where a cult leader dopes his followers by basically oiling himself in liquid
drugs; nor one that features an assassination attempt on said cult leader through a French kiss artfully slipping a poison pill into his mouth. Then again, even while this
particular iteration gets unorthodox with so much else, such off-the-wall creative practical gags are actually right in line with the franchise’s tradition, no?

Anyway, +5000 XP to Marshal Victory for finally pulling me around to
watching this.

Maybe I was just in too sour a mood to fully appreciate the simple
appeal of SHIKI, but I was so very close to invoking Wolpaw’s Law while
watching this. There are a few hints of this maybe doing something provocative
and TWIN PEAKS-like within in our beloved anime milieu. (The creepy opening with
townsfolk searching for a dead body in the woods and the “time lapse” subtitles
being the two hints that seemed the most promising.)

Then, nothing much happens… or, at least, things do happen, but in a
terribly disinteresting way. You’ve got to figure that the state of being
boring has got to be the worst offense an anime staring a pink haired free
spirit could ever commit.

That free spirit gets killed, and her body’s lost in the woods, and the
scruffy guy in the promo image is a prime suspect and… and…

And I honestly can’t bring myself to finish describing the rest of what
happens. I’d likely fall asleep at the keyboard and leave you lunatics with a
long string of nonsensical letters as my nose and eyebrows pressed on random
keys.

Listen, you’ve all stuck with me through the highest valleys and the
deepest depths of this column. You know I’m not somebody who’ll give up too
easily when it comes to discussing an anime here. You know this for a fact. So
you know that it’s no glib statement for me to say that I didn’t find anything worthwhile
to comment upon here.

Somebody watch this episode and write their own review in their blog.
Call me a dismissive jerk for not giving a shot, if it makes you happy.

I’m out.

OK. Before any else… I want to say that there is no way that the clip below
doesn’t contain any CG whatsoever. Go on and watch it and come back here.

There’s
no way you’re going to disagree with me, because there is no way that very
low-res combination of texture and motion blur wasn’t rendered on some
computer. I don’t buy it, no matter what Anno San says. The only answer I’ll
accept is that this is actually an “pre-viz” animatic they’re using before getting to the nitty gritty of stop motion animation.

== TEASER ==

*AHEM*

So this trailer is some ocular proof to match the story we relayed
earlier this week
about “Giant God Warrior Appears in Tokyo,” the live-action
short that EVANGELION-mastermind Hideaki Anno and Studio Ghibli have allied to
produce. Even only seeing just this glimpse, now, it’s pretty clear that the roots
of this story are wrapped all up in the same trunk as EVANGELION – - and I
suppose that shouldn’t be much of a surprise.

Who knows when or if this will ever come stateside. According to ANN, it’s
going to be playing Anno’s exhibition for a limited engagements that’ll charge what
equals about $16-18 for about 5-10 minutes of material… a price point that nearly brings us back to the
days of OAV laser discs ran upwards of $100 to give the most ardent fans about 30 minutes of
anime.

I want you all to know that I’m trying real hard – - fighting
real hard, in fact
– - to not refer to this as HEAVEN’S LOST TITTIES
because, once again, that would reflect the spirit of the plot far more
accurately than the title on the box. I’ve largely been getting these shows
from Funi in a form that seems unedited, but I have a sneaking hunch that the
variety of awkwardly-placed lens flares, silhouettes and floating graphics that
cover up all the erections in this episode were probably inserted by the
translators. Honestly, I don’t have problems most times when a company’s got to
alter content to fit it better to local idioms and mores and whatnot.

However – - when you’ve got a show like HEAVEN’S LOST TITTIES, where the
appeal is pretty much predicated on the unbridled rabidity, you’ve got to
figure that any added discretion is akin to cutting porn down for broadcast on
daytime TV. This show isn’t quite hentai, but it’s not quite a legitimate show,
either – - so the version I got doesn’t really please anybody, does it?

== TEASER ==

Frankly, it’s an incomprehensible mess. The notion of a team solving
mysteries or executing missions within and outside the dreamtime is actually
pretty a worthwhile but… I’ll be straight up… it’s an absolute mess as
presented here. Watching all these shows has been an education in seeing how
complex sci-fantasy concepts should be introduced – - and this nonsensical
tangle really shows what not to do.

Don’t ask me to get into any more detail about that because – - and I’ll
confess to such human weakness
– - I
was absolutely stupefied by the boobs on parade.

Another week and a filling wiki database is a good enough reason for yet another Anime Vice Community Spotlight. Tom was able to share with us a lot of new stories over the week. He had another great interview with Richie Branson about his Otaku Tuesday project and his latest anime rap “Bring Back Toonami”. Fresh off the original EUREKA SEVEN anime, Tom has begun watching the sequel EUREKA SEVEN: ASTRAL OCEAN. The Comm-Service had a lost of great stories, as well. Hope you’re checking them all out and inviting others to join in on our community fun.

I’m thinking about putting a new emphasis on Wiki Tasks to format the wiki pages and get them a bit more unified. Wiki editors should keep their eyes on the Wiki Tasks section for some new bounties soon.

Anime AMV Showcase

I’ve never really watched the WITCHBLADE anime series before. Probably because I wasn’t sure where I could watch it legally. I saw this AMV recently, and the series sure looks pretty well produced. Surprising given it’s based on a US comic. Normally, comics to anime are never really well done.

Remember, if you would like to submit something for the Spotlight. You can send me a PM, but please be sure to add “Spotlight” to the subject line. I can’t stress how important that is because it might just be lost in my Inbox when I clear it.Even if you have worked on something yourself and are really proud of your work. The blurb we ran last week about the professional baseball debut of THE
RING’s vengeful spirit, Sadako
, might as well have just been the seal atop the proverbial
well that just goes deeper and deeper into the scariest recesses of the human
psyche. As it turns out, SADAKO 3D’s marketing team has been thinking very
outside the box (or the TV set, perhaps?) to promote the forthcoming fright
flick. Sadako’s been appearing on some anime to get the word out and, as
relayed by ANN, she’s been doing some promotional stunts that are honestly as
terrifying as they are creative.

First, there’s the undead legion – - the 50-strong parade of Sadakos who
walked through the busy streets of Tokyo as if to actualize the series’ rather
chilling undercurrents about the viral nature of ideas…

== TEASER ==

Then, there’s this absolutely horrifying mobile billboard (or is that more accurately
an edifice?) – - which surely made whomever drove behind it shit their
pants.

Ha ha ha… “404 FILE NOT FOUND.” What do you figure – - will the blue screen of death factor into Sadako’s newly digital fear campaign for this flick?

Incidentally, I believe mobile billboards were made illegal in
California just recently. Seeing that… thing drive around, above, I imagine it
was a matter of public health.

What wonderful timing! I finally get around to checking out EUREKA
SEVEN
for myself… and it turns out it was just in time for the sequel series.

As they did with the first series, Bones is pretty shrewd about the
number and the size of the bread crumbs they lay out for the audience. I’ve
done my best to avoid any plot descriptions or assorted spoilers to keep my experience
here pure – - but the price of that is being faced with 22 minutes that tease
me ever so tantalizingly. Judging what’s
in the episode, by itself, it’s hard to say how this connects to the 50
episodes that have come before – - and I’m pretty sure the crew’s just relishing in
throwing as many red herring at me as they can fit.

== TEASER ==

There’s the reddest potential herring, of course – - this sharp young
lad, Ao. The promo image reveals that he’ll eventually be getting blue hair to
match his pink eyes. Seeing as how he’s got brown hair and he’s also an orphan,
it ain’t far out the question to assume he’s Renton and Eureka’s kid. Though, his
grandpa very much seems to be a grayer Renton – - and then one of the dudes in the intro looks
and sounds a lot like Renton’s grandpa, too – - so it’s probably not as clean and
neat as that.

Going with the obvious theory for the moment, Ao’s already well ahead of where his
pops was at his age. Not only has he already got a girlfriend he’s pretty
confident with, he also doesn’t put up with anybody’s bullshit – - not even
dangerous mecha mercs’. That’s something Renton wasn’t able to do, even after 50
episodes of character building. His
characterization’s markedly different, and I’m so pleased that Bones clearly
did that intentionally.

Aside from that, well… your guess is really as good as mind. I never totally understood how the Scubs
worked on the Coraline (or whatever that planet was,) nor what the relationship
was with Earth. I can see that there we’re in Okinawa, for sure – - a very real
place, obviously
– - but I’m out theories for why.

Maybe I should stick around for episode two to, you know, maybe get a
few more clues?

Watch this episode, “deep blue” here and decide for yourself.
